"Myth of the Social Volcano: Perceptions of Inequality and Distributive Injustice in Contemporary China"

This talk is based on Professor Martin Whyte's forthcoming book Myth of the Social Volcano: Perceptions of Inequality and Distributive Injustice in Contemporary China (Stanford University Press) reporting the results of the 2004 China survey on inequality attitudes.  He also has an in-press article, “Paradoxes of China’s Economic Boom,” to be published in the Annual Review of Sociology.  Professor Whyte is the author of Urban Life in Contemporary China (University of Chicago Press), Village and Family in Contemporary China (University of Chicago Press), and Small Groups and Political Rituals in China (University of California Press).
