NLS Web Investigator

(Access: NLS Web-Investigator Web site)

The National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) are a set of surveys by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics designed to gather information at multiple points in time on the labor market activities and other significant life events of several groups of men and women.

The NLS Web-Investigator allows users to search the database for variables based on words found in the variable name or question text, survey year and question number. Users can view the codebook information associated with that variable, select and extract variables, and create a codebook unique to the variables chosen for each of the various NLS Cohorts. 1- 2- and 3-way frequency distributions can be generated, and users can apply weights to the tables if they wish.

Users can also use the NLS Web-Investigator to create custom weighting variables to analyze studies which cross survey years. Online documentation available through the NLS Web-Investigator includes survey instruments and additional supplements from various survey years, as well as errata, users guides, and technical reports.

Web-Investigator includes the following cohorts: NLSY79, 1979-2004, revised 2007-03-09. -- NLSY79 Child/Young Adult, 1986-2004, revised 2006-07-31. -- NLSY97, 1997-2005, rounds 1-9, released 2007-09-28. -- Orginal Cohort-Older Men. 1966-1990. -- Original Cohort-Mature Women, 1967-2003. -- Original Cohort-Young Men, 1966-1981. -- Original Cohort-Young Women,1968-2003. -- Young Adults, 2006, revised 2007-07-02, Preliminary release.
