In 2004, the EJS program held its inaugural graduate student retreat, over three days at Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma in late September. This event was made possible by a very generous donation of funds by Professor Hilary Hoynes, who also took the lead in organizing the event These retreats allow graduate students and post-docs to present work in progress in an informal setting. The participating faculty also discussed finding research topics, bringing these projects to fruition, as well as how students could prepare best for finding academic jobs. Twelve graduate students and three post-docs participated, along with seven faculty. The next retreat, co-funded by the Social Sciences Program, will be in September 2005, again in Westerbeke. The participating departments this time will include Political Science, Sociology and Economics.
