California Agricultural Mechanization: Lessons from the Past & Prospects for the Future
Awarded to Alan Olmstead, Giannini Foundation, $12,810
This project will analyze the development of the myriad agricultural technologies that propelled California agriculture to world leadership in agricultural productivity. There will be a strong emphasis on understanding the barriers to innovation, both in the spheres of technology and political economy, and in analyzing the causes and consequences of technological change. This work will shed light on our basic understanding of the innovation process and the development of the systems and institutions that created a dynamic environment promoting future innovations. This basic research involves mining state and federal Census data, California Agricultural Experimentation publications, old Giannini Foundation publications, State Agricultural Board reports, contemporary farm journals and newspapers, company records, archives at UCD, UCB, and UCR, and much more.
